My Mom loved magazines, I have to think. That's one of those things from childhood that's kind of fuzzy for me. I remember them lying around often and boxes full of old issues that she never brought herself to part with out in the garage, but I didn't really pay that much attention. They were all boring "homemaker" type mags- Family Circle, Good Housekeeping, etc. (which I read today, btw).
Well ,when we were going through Mom's stuff, preparing her house for a new family, I found an old recipe journal. It must date back to the 50's, maybe early 60's and it's crammed full of clippings from those old magazines. Cooking tips, recipes, thoughts to ponder, etc.- all little golden nuggets, my own little time capsule of the woman that my Mother was .
I found a collection of "thoughts"...not sure what magazine they came from as they were cropped close, but there is a clipping for each month of the year. I was going to wait until January to start sharing, but decided I'd like to start with December (and I will scan and share each month throughout 2009).
So enjoy, and remember the true meaning of the season....

Wow! That is such a great momento and such a great glimpse into the real person that she was! I love the quotes.
What a lovely tribute to your mom! I'm sure that she would be so pleased to know that you are thinking of her in such a special way. Blessings~Sharon

This reminds me of when my mom and I were going through my grandma's things after she passed away. She had several devotional books that she kept in her chest of drawers. Anyhoo, while looking through them (and some of her cookbooks), little newspaper clippings would fall out. Most of them were from the Ann Landers of Victoria, TX. Some were definitions of words like, "love", "class", and courtesies like those. Others were little quotes. All of them with that yummy old newspaper smell and browned to a crisp!
Oooo, you should frame them! Yeah, I'm good at telling people what to do with their stuff! Don't mind me, carry on!
That was a brilliant idea. I love quotes and I'd never seen those two...I need to write them down. I hope you have a nice holiday season.
How wonderful that your mother left these. I lost my mom a few years ago and that "going through her stuff" several months later was so bittersweet.
I've added your blog to my list of "blogs we read" on my site -- please visit and feel free to do the same!
